Remember how each community had
its own little weekly column, usually written by a lady of the community
who was its best cheerleader? This one about Cliffside appeared in
a Shelby paper, judging from other items on the page. The year was
1936.

Community Cannery Now in Full Operations;
Local Items of Interest
Cliffside, July
24.The community cannery is in full operation under the capable
hands of Mr. H.C. Beatty and Mr. John Tinkler. Mrs. G.C. Shuford,
the efficient superintendent of the community gardens is a most tireless
worker, and has had canned up to date over 2,000 cans of fruit and
vegetables. Nearly 17 hundred of these are beans. Cliffside
people
and community are to be congratulated on having this fine cannery
and group of willing workers to help take care of their fruit and
vegetables.
The many friends
of Mrs. B.P. Caldwell are pleased to learn of her improvement. Mrs.
Caldwell is taking treatment in the Charlotte Sanitorium.
Miss Ella Hamrick,
of Spindale, is spending two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Forest Hamrick.
Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn Self, of Asheville, spend the week-end with the latter's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Roberson.
Mr. and Mrs.
L. Black, of the Carolina Store, visited friends in Charlotte over
the week-end.
Mr. Max Pruett,
of the office force at Cliffside Mills, was away last week on his
vacation.
Mr. Yates Miller
is now located in his new furniture store.
Mrs. J. C. Gamble
announces her circle meeting of the W. M. S. to be on Tuesday, August
1, at 7:30 p.m. Visitors always welcome.
Mr. Louis Smith,
of Rutherfordton, was in town Wednesday on business.
Miss Virginia
Moore, of the Ballenger Dry Goods Store is well pleased with the big
sale receipts of last week. The buying public was enthusiastic over
the many bargains offered.
Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Hensley visited in Forest City last week-end.
A series of meetings
are to be held in the Baptist church beginning the latter part of
August. Cottage prayer meetings are now being planned, and we are
praying for the greatest revival in the church's history. Rev. J.
