The entire Mooneyham block in Henrietta was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning. The origin is unknown. The block of brick buildings, all joined together, facing the Cliffside highway at the intersection of the roads, owned by Mr. O. J. Mooneyham of Forest City were burned. Only the walls are left standing and they will likely fall, as they are dangerous standing.
Mr. W. Paul Carpenter who operated a grocery store and meat market is likely the heaviest loser. Virgil Wall’s shoe shop was also destroyed, as well as the filling station, theater, etc.
The total loss is estimated from $20,000 to $25,000 with about $3,000 insurance on the building and $3,000 on the grocery store.
The fire departments from Forest City and Rutherfordton were called to the scene but the fire had too much headway to save the buildings. The firemen saved nearby buildings. This is one of the most destructive fires that section has had in years.
