Help Wanted

Could anyone provide information or material in the following categories of the history and ways of Cliffside? We need stories, memories, details and/or photos.

Categories
Pony PicturePony pictures: In the past a professional photographer would periodically proceed down Cliffside's public paths taking pictures of children sitting atop his pony (also presumably a professional), for which their parents probably paid a pretty penny. We're praying that you can provide a plethora of these particular pictures for our planned photo parade of precious progeny posed prettily on ponies (preferably pintos).

The building of the town: Construction of the dam and the mill, designing the street grid, conversion from water power to electrical power, the electrification of the homes, installation of indoor plumbing.

The destruction of the town: Razing of houses, destruction and removal of the downtown buildings, grading and reshaping the landscape, building of the bypass, fencing in what remained.

The construction of the Duke Power plant and village. Early pictures of the workers and residents. Faces and families; street scenes; railroad scenes. Statistics: in a year's time, how much coal is hauled in, how much electricity was (and is) generated, etc. Who were prominent people in the operation.

The mill. The scope and size of its operation, from early days to present day. How and why the focus was changed from gingham to terry cloth, then to denim. The number and expertise of employees. Descriptions of: the carding, dying, spinning, slashing, weaving, inspecting processes. How a loom operates. The difficulties involved in weaving cloth. The atmosphere, methods and specific jobs in the mill. How were the products of Cliffside Mills sold? Who were the customers? What were the deals?
The construction of the new school that was dedicated in 1922. Length of construction period, number and origin of workers, construction techniques. Its early impact on the town and the residents' way of life.

Transportation in Cliffside and the surrounding area. Description and photos of older cars, trucks, buses, unusual conveyances.

Special events held in the area. Details of concerts, plays, recitals, sporting matches.
Famous or special visitors to Cliffside.
Home life. Kitchens, cooking, shopping, special family events, gardening, marriages, child rearing, funerals, wakes.
The river. Experiences, knowledge, memories of the river and the pond.
The railroad. Experiences, knowledge, memories of Cliffside Railroad, its operation and its crew, especially Cardy “Shine” Freeman. Details of the demise of the railroad: when and why was it shut down, when were the tracks torn up.
