Could anyone provide information or
material in the following categories of the history and ways of Cliffside?
We need stories, memories, details and/or photos.

Pony
pictures: In the past a professional photographer would periodically
proceed down Cliffside's public paths taking pictures of children
sitting atop his pony (also presumably a professional), for which
their parents probably paid a pretty penny. We're praying that
you can provide a plethora of these particular pictures for our
planned photo parade of precious progeny posed prettily on ponies
(preferably pintos). |

The building of the town: Construction
of the dam and the mill, designing the street grid, conversion
from water power to electrical power, the electrification of
the homes, installation of indoor plumbing.

| The destruction of the town: Razing of houses, destruction and removal of the
downtown buildings, grading and reshaping the landscape, building
of the bypass, fencing in what remained. |
|
The construction of the Duke Power plant
and village. Early pictures of the workers and residents.
Faces and families; street scenes; railroad scenes. Statistics:
in a year's time, how much coal is hauled in, how much electricity
was (and is) generated, etc. Who were prominent people in the
operation.

| The mill.
The scope and size of its operation, from early days to present
day. How and why the focus was changed from gingham to terry cloth,
then to denim. The number and expertise of employees. Descriptions
of: the carding, dying, spinning, slashing, weaving, inspecting
processes. How a loom operates. The difficulties involved in weaving
cloth. The atmosphere, methods and specific jobs in the mill.
How were the products of Cliffside Mills sold? Who were the customers?
What were the deals? |
| The construction
of the new school that was dedicated in 1922. Length of
construction period, number and origin of workers, construction
techniques. Its early impact on the town and the residents' way
of life. |

Transportation in Cliffside and the surrounding
area. Description and photos of older cars, trucks, buses, unusual
conveyances.

| Special events held in the area. Details of concerts, plays, recitals, sporting
matches. |
| Famous or special
visitors to Cliffside. |
| Home life.
Kitchens, cooking, shopping, special family events, gardening,
marriages, child rearing, funerals, wakes. |
| The river.
Experiences, knowledge, memories of the river and the pond. |
| The railroad.
Experiences, knowledge, memories of Cliffside Railroad, its operation
and its crew, especially Cardy “Shine” Freeman. Details
of the demise of the railroad: when and why was it shut down,
when were the tracks torn up. |
