You wonder, is this Cliffside? The topography seems to
be about right; there's an obvious horseshoe bend in the river, the iron
bridge appears to be “our” iron bridge. Yet, the river's
level is much lower than what we were used to, and the white building
with some kind of conveyer pipes (shown just under the men on the bridge)
seems oddly out of place, as if suspended over the deep ravine where,
in “our day,”the creek ran south toward the river. But then again, the topography
might have been changed drastically when the “Shelby
Highway” bridge was built in the late 1920s,
about ten years after this picture was made. The ravine may not
have been so deep in earlier days.
The low water level shown in the picture must have been
the norm, for the plank walkway looks fairly permanent.
But why was a dressed-up lady down here? Where was she going?
