The Bypass

In the mid and late 1960's the town of Cliffside was changed beyond anything anyone could imagine. A wide swath was gouged out of one of the residential districts, completely eliminating Reservoir Street, most of Church Street and a number of the numbered streets to the east of North Main.

It was a massive project, costing millions, and lasting more than a year, yet we've found only a few dozen photos of the work. All of them were taken, of course, by Roy Lee Harris. The ones we've found in his collection (so far) were made in just a few trips to the site.

In a couple of the color photos there is a small brick structure that was allowed to remain, at least for the moment. Could that be what was known as the “Sulphur Well?”

There are two galleries, 16 photos in each, and at the top of each you can navigate to the other.
