It was the year Legos were invented, the Dodgers left Brooklyn, Elvis joined the Army and Ted Williams was baseball's highest paid player at $135,000 per year. Also, Butch Harris, Joyce Putnam, Roger Dedmond, Barbara Jackson, Steve Guffey, Betty Raines and 17 others graduated from Cliffside High.

For all those fans of 1953, here's the Cliffdweller for that wonderful time. Remember? Jimmy Ingram, Betsey Forbes, Patsy Ingram and Hugh Blanton were part of our crowd of 26 bright-eyed fledglings who thought we were prepared to take on the world. Ha!

We were familiar with the High School teams and yearbooks called the Cliffdwellers, Old Gold and Black, The Eagle and, in the 1920s, the Purple Cloud, but we didn't know about this school name until we laid eyes on The Cliff Climbers, the Cliffside High yearbook for 1941.

1959 Cliffdweller

It's the last of the yearbooks from Cliffside High. We've now scanned and posted all 18 of the ones available, dating from 1937. It also marked the last class to graduate from Cliffside. The next senior class went to Chase, the new consolidated school.

It was the year Disneyland opened, Coke in cans became available, gasoline was 23¢ a gallon, $64,000 Question was on TV, James Dean died and Kevin Costner was born, we got polio shots for the first time and a small hamburger chain called McDonald's was created. Oh, and the class of 1955 graduated from Cliffside High.

Bill Haley & the Comets recorded "Rock Around The Clock," the Tasmanian Devil first appeared in Bugs Bunny cartoons, the first transistor radio became available... but that's not all, the Cliffside High class of '54 graduated. We can prove it, here's their yearbook.
